Balloon sinuplasty, a Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved medical procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis, is not only a simple procedure available to patients in office, but is also likely to be covered by insurance, which help to further reduce out of pocket costs.

Balloon sinuplasty is for chronic rhinosinusitis patients whose conditions have not been managed by other means including medical management, according to Medical News Today. The procedure is simple and minimally invasive. It all happens in the nose where a tiny balloon is inserted and expanded to open the sinuses.

"Most of the procedures can be done in 15 to 30 minutes with a quick recovery and then people are on their way home," Dr. Anthony D Sanders of Indianapolis Sinus Center said. "The advantage is that you don't have to have a full general anesthetic with a breathing tube and there's no facility fee involved, so it tends to be cheaper than doing it at a facility."

Caused by viral and bacterial infections and sometimes structural issues, symptoms of sinusitis include facial discomfort, inflammation of sinus, nasal discharge, pain in bridge of nose and headache and fatigue, according to the American Sinus Institute. Candidates from balloon sinuplasty are patients who suffer chronically or routinely.

According to Medical News Today the procedure is no longer considered an experimental or elective surgery and is customarily covered by insurance. If sinus infections are impeding your daily life it is time to see a sinus inflammation specialist.

According to the American Sinus Institute, rhinosinusitis or sinusitis affects women more than men, affecting 17% of women and 10% of males out of the 37 million sufferers yearly.

According to GoodRx, the procedure is less expensive in the office when compared to the procedure done in a hospital setting.
