Sinus experts at Indianapolis Sinus Center want to clear up some preconceived notions about balloon sinuplasty.

Balloon sinuplasty, also known as balloon catheter dilation surgery, is recommended for people who suffer from chronic sinusitis, after other home remedies have been ineffective, according to Healthline. It is one of the newest and most exciting tools sinus inflammation specialists have in their arsenal. During this minimally invasive procedure, a tiny balloon is inserted into the nose and inflated, thereby expanding the nasal cavities and helping improve the patient's breathing.

Recovery time isn’t what you might expect when you think of a “surgical intervention.” According to a study published by the medical journal The Laryngoscope, patients who underwent sinuplasty during a regular doctor's visit under local anesthesia, on average, needed only 1.4 days of recovery, compared to 4.2 days for patients who had other surgical interventions.

"Our philosophy is to provide the very best state-of-the-art care for chronic nasal and sinus problems, utilizing the latest minimally invasive technologies to allow for physiologic treatment and maintaining normal nasal function as well as reduced pain and shorter recovery times," Dr. Anthony Sanders of Indianapolis Sinus Center said. "Typically people can be back to work within a few days after procedure."

Recovery plans for balloon sinuplasty make no mention of nose packing with gauze or bruising. However, it might be recommended that you avoid blowing your nose, rinse your nose with saline, sleep with your head elevated and avoid exerting yourself for the first few days after you've had the procedure.

The results of balloon sinuplasty procedures are long-term. A previous study published in the medical journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation concluded that 85% of patients reported improvements in their sinus symptoms, even two years after the procedure.
